Holy Week Destinations in Cagayan de Oro 2012 http://www.explorecdo.com/holy-week-destinations-in-cdo-2012/ http://www.explorecdo.com/holy-week-destinations-in-cdo-2012/#comments Wed, 28 Mar 2012 05:22:50 +0000 cdoexplorer http://www.explorecdo.com/?p=833 Holy Week is a religious tradition celebrated by Roman Catholics and devoted Christians in the Philippines. Here in the city of Golden Friendship we also celebrate the passion and death of Christ in a very spiritual and holistic way through penitence and being part in the celebration of the Semana Santa. The holy week  usually starts on April 1, which is Palm Sunday up to April 8 Easter Sunday. During this week, devotees gather in various Holy Week destinations in Cagayan de Oro to take part of this religious celebration. Check out our highly recommended Holy Week destinations in CDO and nearby areas.

Cagayan de Oro Holy Week Destinations:

Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine

The shrine is frequented by local devotees and nature lovers during Holy Week and is becoming popular over the years. To get to the Shrine itself, pilgrims have to trek a 4km trail, crossing through a zigzag of 9 rivers connecting barangay Tablon, Agusan and Balubal. Barangay Tablon is just a few minutes away from Divisoria centertown.

Divine Mercy Shrine

Located in the small town of El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, a 45-minute ride away from Cagayan de Oro City. The shrine opened in 2008 and since then devotees from all around the country became very fascinated by the grandeur and beauty of the 50-foot statue of Jesus Christ.

Camiguin Walkway To The Old Volcano

During the Panaad Festival in Camiguin, devotees trek the popular walkway located in Bonbon, a few kilometers away from Catarman. Life size statues depict the 14 Stations of the Cross dot the trail which leads to the Old Volcano’s peak. Scenic views of the island can be seen once you arrive at the mountain peak.

CDO will not be experiencing any power interruptions http://www.explorecdo.com/no-brownout-blackout-in-cagayan-de-oro/ http://www.explorecdo.com/no-brownout-blackout-in-cagayan-de-oro/#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 02:01:09 +0000 cdoexplorer http://www.explorecdo.com/?p=828 The Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO) assures the public that the city will not be experiencing any power shortage or blackouts in the next month despite the news of a power shortage in Mindanao. Their are certain areas around Mindanao experiencing rotational brown outs and power supply cuts due to scheduled preventive maintenance and river desilting operations conducted by the NPC and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) at the Pulangi hydro power plants in Bukidnon.

CEPALCO already has planned measures to prevent rotating blackouts, which were experienced by most Kagayan-ons last 2010 when rotational brownouts were imposed in the city. According to Marilyn Chavez, Cepalco’s community relations manager, the electric company will be sourcing out power from the diesel plant of Minergy located in barangay Tablon. The diesel plant is said to have been producing 27-Megawatt power to the consuming public under the service area of Cepalco.

Local consumers are also urged to be part of the energy saving campaign and applying it at home or in the office in order to save electricity thereby helping save money and resources for future use.

Camiguin Island Panaad 2012 http://www.explorecdo.com/camiguin-island-panaad-2012/ http://www.explorecdo.com/camiguin-island-panaad-2012/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 04:40:37 +0000 cdoexplorer http://www.explorecdo.com/?p=816 Camiguin Island is not only a tourist destination but also a place for devotees to contemplate and pilgrims to offer a sacrifice during lenten season. The Panaad 2012 in Camiguin is an annual celebration of Roman Catholics to commemorate the Holy Week and death of Christ. People from all walks of life visit the island yearly to make a pilgrimage by walking around the island. ‘Panaad’ is a local term derived from the Visayan word ‘saad’ which means “To Promise.” Some of the pilgrims said that if you can conquer the hardships of the 64 km walk, you can conquer any hardships that may come in your life.

The 64-kilometer walk through the island’s municipalities and an uphill walk in Mt. Vulcan where the 14 Stations of the Cross are located is one of the highlights of the Panaad 2012. The long walk starts at Holy Wednesday and ends on Good Friday, where devotees from all over Mindanao and neighboring provinces flock the island for the annual celebration.

As for tourists spending the Holy Week in one of Camiguin Island’s beach resorts, their are a lot of things to do aside from being part of the Panaad 2012. Their are a lot of tourist attractions that you might be interested in that would make your trip a very memorable one.

For first timers who are planning to join the Panaad 2012 walk, make sure to follow these tips to be safe. I did the walk last year and because we were carrying to much baggage, we ended up not finishing the whole trip on the island as we were so exhausted carrying heavyweight backpacks. We started in the port of Guinsiliban and ended up in Benoni Wharf just a few kilometers away and then hailed a motor cab all the way to Mambajao and look for a cozy beach side resort to relax and just decided to spend the rest of the Holy Week in a backpackers cabin.

Tips for Panaad 2012 in Camiguin travelers:

  • Travel light.
  • Leave your things at the resort where you’re staying or at a friend’s house.
  • Bring only a small backpack/beltbag with extra shirt, face towels, bottled water, snacks, and a first aid kit.
  • Cellphones are a must and must be fully charged before engaging in the walk.
  • Make sure to register for the walk at the port and ask for numbers to contact in case of emergency.
  • Wear light clothes and definitely no jeans. Use sandals and comfortable slippers.
  • When you’re tired, rest on nearby chapels.
  • Make sure to follow the trail. Based on experience, there are hikers who follow different roads and go the wrong direction. Although it’s safe to walk around Camiguin during day time, it’s better to be safe at all times.
  • Lastly, enjoy the moment and take some pictures.

5th GOLDEN FLOAT PARADE COMPETITION
Major Cities in the world have, in one form or another, a grand parade to celebrate and honor these cities heritage.  The Golden Float Parade follows in the tradition of Cagayan de Oro Civic-Military Parade.  This parade showcases the myriad characters of our city’s institutions, organizations, interest groups, industries, police and branches of the military – all in commemoration of their collective contribution to the socio-cultural-economic-religi?ous development of Cagayan de Oro.  What more opportune time to feature this, than the Fiesta of Cagayan de Oro’s patron, Saint Augustine.
The Golden Float Parade Competition features different float entries from participating Companies, Government, Non-Government and Private Organizations, Schools, and Agencies. This will be held in the morning of August 27, 2011 along the main city streets.  Each float depicts a themed design or drama recounting Cagayan de Oro’s growth and development, history, people or cultural or event.  Cash prizes at stake are: 1st prize – P150,000;  2nd Prize – P100,000; 3rd Prize – 50,000.
This year’s Golden Float Parade will primarily follow last year’s format.  It will be a Civic-Military Parade with the Golden Float Parade Competition as the main feature.  The route shall also begin at the Rodelsa Circle, passes through Velez St. and the National Highway, and end at the main road of the Limketkai Center.  Participating bands shall be limited to 12 and the competing floats shall be towards the tail end of the parade.

HALAD SA LAMBAGOHAN
The Halad sa Lambagohan goes beyond the fiesta celebration in each of our homes. Lambagohan is the original name of Cagayan de Oro, referring to the lush lambago trees thriving in our riverbanks; they signify our community’s stake of identity, of pride of place, of community life. Our Halad to the Lambagohan is therefore an offering of thanksgiving for the nurturing care the riverine spirits have afforded to our community. And so we offer a harvest of the expressions of the spirit and soul of Kagay-anons in our journey towards excellence. We offer all our hopes and dreams and good wishes. We offer our poetry, our songs, our dances, our artistic yearnings for a better world for each and everyone of us. We offer our art and soul, our heart and minds, our wondrous imaginings. This harvest of voice and vision is what Halad sa Lambagohan is about a week-long harvest of the Kagay-anons’ preeminence in art and culture on the world stage. Organized by Liceo de Cagayan University and the Zealep Group of Companies, in particular the Paseo del Rio de Cagayan, Inc., the Halad sa Lambagohan is open to the public free of charge on August 22 to 28, 2011 at the Rodelsa Circle, the only public park in the city that has become the happening place for art and culture aficionados.
Partner Organization (s): Liceo de Cagayan University and Paseo Del Rio
